The School of Architecture is seeking an outstanding candidate to join Prof. Jiaxiu Cai's research team as Junior Research Assistant, to support the project "Integrating Generative AI and Space Syntax into a Multidisciplinary Framework for Logic-Driven Virtual World and Game Environment Design ". This project is funded by the Courseware Development Grant Scheme (CDGS) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is dedicated to addressing a critical challenge in digital design education: the lack of underlying spatial logic in virtual environment design. We aim to establish a systematic design methodology for virtual worlds and game environments by integrating quantitative urban analysis tools (Space Syntax) with cutting-edge generative AI workflows.
Applicants should have/be (i) a Bachelor's degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Computer Science, Media Arts, Game Design, or related diciplines; (ii) familiar with the analytical logic and practical application of Space Syntax, as well as possess proficient practical experience in generative AI-assisted design and game engine (UE5) Grayboxing; (iii) a proven track record of high-quality publications (Q1 journals preferred) and excellent English writing skills; and (iv) demonstrated independence, critical thinking, and a meticulous approach to research.
The appointee will be responsible for (a) producing ten teaching micro-modules focusing on AI methodologies and spatial logic; (b) coordinating cross-institutional data and integrating the virtual heritage database from academic partners in the Greater Bay Area; (c) assisting in the daily technical maintenance and management of Unreal Engine (UE5) plugins and API interfaces; (d) completing academic papers based on the project's processes and results, and publishing them in international conferences and high-level journals; and (e) carrying out the necessary teaching activities required for the project.
Appointment will initially be made on contract basis for three months, renewable subject to good performance and mutual agreement.
Applicants should submit the following documents in the online application: (1) a CV, (2) a brief cover letter (specifying your research interests and availability), and (3) a portfolio or writing sample. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Outstanding candidates may be recommended for PhD study in 2026-2027 with opportunities for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS).
